the venue for the match vs Old Boys.
Several new additions to our ever increasing squad of
cricketing superstars. Left arm pace bowler Jono Jefferies bowled a 7 over
spell that included line, length, swing, seam and a bit of bounce. Par for the
course at Kaipaki though it also included wides, no balls, full tosses, fours
and sixes. He will fit in well as our other left arm quicks (K.Currie,
D.Faville) will see a lot of similarities in his bowling, notably wides, no
balls, full tosses, fours and sixes. Cant bat however. Jono was clean bowled by
a 9 year old kid.
Bones mate Blair Millar who reportadly played for
Canterbury back in the day ( or maybe worked there or something?) kept wickets
to the highest standard and contributed in the middle order. Excellent
recruitment by you Mr Armstrong, Bones can now spend the rest of the season
concentrating on his cricket management career as he is no longer required coz
his mate is better than him. Way to take one for the team
bones.
Simon Groves, brother of Nick strode to the crease at
no.5 with determination oozing from underneath his dark sharky sunglasses he
wore out in the middle. He nicked edged and eventually tonked his way to a very
useful 20odd, useful contribution would it not of been for the 40odd that came
off his two overs at the bowling crease. Great effort to finish the game
though, same cant be said for brother Nick. After being handed the new cherry,
Nick didnt manage to get the first ball on the pitch or to the batsmen, he
limped to the boundary and retired hurt not long after. Nick Groves out, Mushty
Kapadia in.
We positioned Mushty on the Long on boundary where he was
under the pump from the Old Boys batsmen. Skipper for the day (M.Clayton)
choosing not to send anyone else out there to help him coz he knew none of us
can catch either and at least Mushty managed to pull one catch in. Great effort
Mushty.
It needs to be noted also that a slips catch was actually
taken by a Kaipaki fieldsman, ending the myth that fat captains just park
themselves at first slip so they don't have to do any work in the
field.
Scott 'Rigger' Keelty has put one hand on Dean Bellis's
Kaipaki Cricketer of the year trophy. First game for the season for Rigger. He
looked the skipper in the eye on arrival at the ground and said "theres gona be
a big crowd here today Clayton, they are here to watch me, I will open the
batting and the bowling today wether you like it or not" Obviously a man of this
steel means business and was given both duties. The crowd (Nick Groves 3 kids
and Nick Groves dad) were not dissapointed, very handy two wickets with the ball
and 30odd with bat. Last seen leaving the ground ( limping, and saying Bellis,
Bellis who the f#@* is Bellis, im the best cricketer in Kaipaki. I am!) followed
by pre-arranged high fives from the Groves kids. Keelty was man of the
match.
Solid contribution as always Dan Fenwick has applied to
Martin Bradley for funds to put a T.A.B at the Kaipaki pavillion. Dans 7 overs
on the trot were a real steadying influence on the side, however Dans now gone
into hiding until the next game at Steel park because his version of fielding
is sitting at the T.A.B and he is currently in negotiations for this to happen.
Good on the bbq also, great team man.
Taz Kapadia took to the bowling crease to ensure us he
would sort out the onslaught from the OldBoys batsmen, the Old boys batsmen had
other ideas though. Two balls into his third over Taz looked tho the skipper to
indicate he'd had enough. No problems though as Taz is still rated higher on
the I.C.C world ratings than Ronil Krishnan(ngahinapouri) and is still Scott
Couch's favourite Indian.
Old Boys total of 320 off 35 overs looked imposing, it
could of been worse had it not been for the fielding of the entire Tindall
family and the last and only over from Chris Tindall. 1 over 1 wicket 3 runs
from memory. Good captaincy I say, holding back your ace til the
end.
Note to self for future games, give the ball to Chris
Tidall earlier.
Great plates, however the Kiehly Clayton sausage rolls
never got a run this week. Fenwick went well, good initiative, those potato
things were cracker, and the variety of cakes, sandwiches and sweets,
outstanding. Solid effort by all.
Good all round effort with the bat, however after losing
several early wickets we were always slightly behind the 8-ball. Bowled out for
160odd.
Overall another good day at the Oval, some new recruits,
some old names coming back, and an Old Boys side left with an ever lasting good
impression of how they were hosted at Kaipaki. A few beers and a bbq at the end
of the day was a great way to cap off the
day.
Yours in now having a 1 from 4 captaincy record and
thinking if I want to be any good at cricket maybe I should practice but know i
wont coz shadow batting in your new whites after a few beers is just as good as
practicing)
