Match Summary
Kaipaki have fought hard to beat previously unbeaten St Paul’s in a very even encounter at St Paul’s. In a game that could of gone either way Kaipaki’s experienced players in Corey Hyde, Brad Leonard, Jerem Wylie and Craig Bulloch have led Kaipaki to victory.

After winning the toss and electing to bat on a pitch that had good pace and bounce St Paul’s batted patiently to set Kaipaki 238. At One stage it looked like St Paul’s would get close to 300 after being 160 for 3 at 36 overs. The teams took lunch at this score and it was exactly the regroup Kaipaki needed as they came out after lunch and took 7 wickets for 60 runs to bowl St Paul’s out in the 54th over. Kaipaki bowled reasonably well throughout the innings but they did have to fight hard to get wickets. Bulloch returning the best figures with 3 for 36 but Wylie and Patterson also bowled a consistent line and length.

Kaipaki lost wickets regularly throughout their innings but the mainstays of Hyde (84), Leonard (31) and Wylie (60no) made sure that Kaipaki kept ahead in their run chase. Kaipaki probably should have won the game a lot earlier than they did but St Paul’s fought hard right to the end and Kaipaki eventually needed 2 runs off the last ball of the game to win. Wylie who seems to play his best when the backs are against the wall made sure of the victory by hitting the last ball for four over square leg.

Kaipaki remain unbeaten in their Champions trophy defence. However they have a double header this weekend playing Otorohanga on Saturday and a catch up match vs St Paul’s on Sunday – both at Kaipaki Oval. With a depleted playing squad this weekend Kaipaki will have to call on their club depth to keep their unbeaten record intact.

The Seddon Cup was on the line again. Defending champions West Ham facing Kaipaki at home.
Surprisingly, we managed to find 11 players with ease this weekend, considering it was Valentine’s Day.
Let’s be honest, we all know who our first love is…BEER….the biggest motivation to turn up for cricket.

A big day for Kaipaki Gold. A “Must Win” match in order to make it to the semis plus the added pressure of trying to win back the Seddon Cup on home soil. The last time we faced West Ham, things didn’t go in our favour.

After winning the toss, Michael Clayton took the cricketing world by surprise, when he told the opposition Captain that we would bowl first. The first Captain to ever make this decision in 125 years at Kaipaki Oval.

Opening the bowling attack were Howard Baker and Nick Binnie - which confused the batsmen with their spin and pace combination. Both bowlers bowled a continuous spell of 7 overs on the trot, giving a great start to the innings. Howie picked up 4 wickets in his spell and Nick got 1 – with the visitors going to drinks in a bit of trouble at 100/5.
After drinks - good contributions from our part time bowlers Taz Kapadia and Darin Armstrong, picking up 2 wickets each. I guess Mr Clayton spotted their hidden talents during the Waitangi Day 6 a side tournament.

Kaipaki rolled West Ham for 148 in 29 overs.

LUNCH – a great effort from the lads with their Plates this week – there was enough food to feed both Teams plus the Kaipaki Green Team who came to support after cleaning up in their match earlier – and then still enough food left over to feed everyone after the match had finished !
Kaipaki chasing 149 at home seemed fairly achievable, however going by our past record we didn’t want to take this too lightly.

Opening the batting were M Kapadia and D Faville, giving a slow – but steady - start to the innings. First to go was D Faville. In came D Fenwick, who took control of the innings and put the run chase within reach before the drinks break.
Unfortunately, he lost his wicket just before the break.

West Ham saw a small glimmer of hope after the drinks break as Kaipaki lost 2 more wickets in quick succession. The game was eventually won in the 25th over. D Armstrong doing the final honours having to go out to the middle with 1 run required to win – hit the first ball to the boundary.
Key highlights:
H. Baker picking up 4 wickets in his spell and a good day at the field too. Was awarded the best bowler for the day.
D. Fenwick scored a quick 67 and Musti Kapadia anchored the innings with 44 not out.

Big thanks to the Clayton kids – Taya and Billy for helping us dish out the food at halftime.

The Senior C tournament is now reaching its final stages, with 2 more “Must Win” games coming up – if we are to make the Semis.
We are playing Good Guys this coming weekend at Raymond Park. With the ICC World Cup fever in the air the motivation will be high among the boys to win the upcoming games.

Kaipaki Cruise Past Cambridge

Result: Kaipaki won by 7 wickets

Match Summary
Kaipaki have put in a very good performance to beat neighbouring club Cambridge. Kaipaki were able to bowl a consistently good line and length on a pitch that rewarded accurate bowling. After Ross Laidlaw and Craig Bulloch knocked over Cambridge’s opening batsmen it paved way for the ever improving seam bowler Greg Patterson and the evergreen Dean Busch to finish Cambridge off. Patterson came to NZ as a batsman but due to Kaipaki’s batting depth and limited bowling stocks Patterson has found himself as Kaipaki’s leading wicket taker this season. Dean Busch also in the team as a batsman has been in fine form with the ball and has again returned good figures – the wily Busch still has the ability to move the ball both ways and has good variation that keeps the batsmen guessing.

Kaipaki will be happy that they put in another good fielding display as it has been a continual work on this season. Bowling Cambridge out for 148 is an impressive display as Cambridge are always tough on their home turf.

Kaipaki in return made little work of the 148 required. Fraser Kilgour and Brad Leonard guiding them to victory in 19 overs. Leonard will be particularly happy with his performance as he has been frustrated with a lack of batting time this season and he will be happy with his contribution. Kilgour struggling with tendonitis in his feet batted well. His 6 that finished the game cleared the main pavilion, which is a massive hit in any game of cricket.

Kaipaki now look forward to playing the other unbeaten side St Paul’s next Saturday.

• Kaipaki Gold V Old Boys

Conditions    “Too many Jager Bombs the night before!!!”
The air around Steele Park was somewhat stagnant as players arrived for this weeks match.

Maybe it was the homeless guys asleep in their urine stained pants passed out next to us or maybe it was the repercussions of what had transpired the previous day at the Kaipaki 6 a-side tournament.
Although the former certainly played some part, with members of both 6 a-side final teams together again, there was an uneasy tension in the air.
Even Howie “Makatu” Baker, who has been barred from anything resembling a BBQ, could have cut the air with a knife.
And the late withdrawal of Mr D Armstrong & Mr S Bratton, both integral members of the Challenge team, spoke volumes of the feeling of the now sober and somewhat regretful “6 a-side Champions”!!!

However, this fiasco was quickly put aside as the Green & Gold’s came together, ready to take on the tough task of a strong Old Boy’s side, albeit some a little late and a lot worse for wear.

Kaipaki were put into bat on a dry outfield where runs would be on the offer thick and fast. After the early loss of Taz to a nice, rising delivery, snared at first slip, Glenn Collins and Craig Bulloch looked comfortable against a bowling attack (that included no less than three Premier level Old Boy bowlers).

Glenn played some positive shots for a brisk 16, while Bully was in total control, till undone by a jaffa of a yorker that took out his off stump, when he was on 41.

Roddie Sim, too looked good in compiling his 23 before lofting one, off the bowling of Old Boys MVP, “The Pom”.

Skipper, Michael Clayton, eased into his innings, with batsman coming and going, and not troubling the scorers too much. He did find a partner in Wayne “Red Dog” Clifford and then he opened his shoulders and let rip. These two took us to the end of our innings, with some lusty blows to give us some semblance of respectability with a total of 207. Guppy unbeaten on 77 and Red Dog unbeaten on 17.

Change of innings, Hair of the Dog or two, and Kaipaki bowled well with Kent Currie, Elliot Webb and Craig Bulloch all chucking down the new leather and bowling with good pace, length and movement.

But today wasn’t to be the Nations day. It appears that cross batting does pay off when facing a good attack and Old Boys slogged away and edged into every possible gap that the field offered to reach the total 4 down and with plenty of balls to spare.

Mention must go to Roddie who kept extremely well behind the stumps, a great catch by Taz and a “Jonty Rhodes” like run out by Red Dog. Other than that, not alot to offer.

Thanks to our supporters on the day, J Wylie, The Parkers, The Poms and all our lovely Wags & children.

So Kaipaki Gold lose another one, but calculations show that three wins in our remaining three matches (against lesser opposition) means we still make the semis.

So come on Nation, make yourselves available or get down to support and lets finish this season with a BANG!

Day started well, beers put on Ice , afternoon tea in the fridge
Kaipaki lost the toss and was put into field for the 1st Innings – which transpired to be divided into thirds. We started well ,had a slow middle and a tighter last 10 overs.

1/3.
Opening bowlers lead by the fluid Flavell and his 16 year old left arm apprentice Tom Anderson maintained a tight accurate opening spell keeping Suburbs to 50 for 3 after 10.
Anderson showing some bounce and carry for his slender young age getting a sharp lifting delivery draw an edge to gully which was masterly taken by the MVP of the day - Dan Fenwick.

Things turned a bit south after drinks, with Suburbs skipper Russ and his batting Partner Adam, settling in and then taking the long handle to the bowling.
In approx. 15 overs they belted a partnership of 135 to all parts, showing no respect for a variety of bowlers.
Even a bit of niggle did not seem to upset them. Maybe even galvanised to even more lusty hitting.

Was a wake up call... we were staring down the barrel of a 350 run chase until the Skipper had master stroke and MVP Dan Fenwick was tossed the ball.
Maybe insulting being called a part timer, as he proceeded to rip apart the Suburbs line up. Showing the earlier bowlers how to bowl line a length at the Kaipaki oval... he broke the partnership then with Kent Currie getting the skipper, MVP Dan Fenwick bowled the next 3 batsmen to end the innings with 4/45 and Suburbs reigned back in for a total 289.

The Boys felt we were in with a sniff at half time.
The run chase got off to a flyer.... MVP Dan Fenwick & Taz Kapadia rocked along, racing to the 50 in 4.3 overs.
The loss of Taz did not slow the momentum, with Deane Bellis lighting up the boundary ropes early.

The 2nd wicket to fall was MVP Dan Fenwick for a well struck 43 in the 9th over.
Not a worry – the Team still had momentum.

The loss of Bellis 3 runs later caused a ripple in the team and bit of consolidation was taken. Kent demonstrating a picture perfect shadow batting in the nude forward defence.(someone needs to get a picture).

After drinks it was time to lift the run rate which had the RPO around 13 and climbing rapidly.
Suburbs brought on their slow bowlers which made it very difficult to hit unless it was rank 1/2 tracker.
Scoreboard pressure lead to the demise of a remaining wickets with Kent making a well compiled 50 with some lusty blows.

Guppy 27 and Red Dog 28 were the only contributors of note, before the wheels completely fell off with Kaipaki all out for 221 in the 32nd over .

Dan Fenwick = outstanding afternoon tea,    4 for 45 + good catch   and well struck 43 opening the batting.

Jolie Fenwick = entertaining the children outstanding afternoon tea (Dan claims it was his) and all day attendance!!!!

This would be USA Today’s headline news if it wasn’t for Superbowl this coming weekend.

Britain’s the Financial Times would read - “ Shares in Kaipaki Gold rise on the back of solid performance”

The Melville HardOut pamphlet drop asks inside - “Bellis Bellis, who the f%$k is Bellis?”

Well, on a Thursday evening in the boondocks of Melville Heights, there wasn’t a reporter to be seen, but had there been – they would've witnessed and reported on a timely return to form of the Kaipaki Nations founding team; which sees them into the top six playoffs for the Claude Cup!

Rather than leaving the teams’ Top Six hopes to chance, it was decided and agreed between the grades equally most average teams that the smash and grab 20/20 format of cricket would be used to decide who would be the best of the worst (or the worst of the best).

The Gold bit of the Nation has always struggled in the field, with age, lack of enthusiaism and sometimes inability being the contributing factors but in this format of the game, the team was always going to back itself with heavy hitters such as Michael Orangeboom, Tazman Kapadia and Wylie Coyote to call on in the batting ranks.

However, following a team honesty session in Queenstown – the team produced one of the finest fielding efforts seen in the modern game! With some calculated field placements and sticking to a bowling plan Melville found itself in the shite from the outset. Tossing a ball up that turned 90, Big Red Dog sent the middle stump of the opening batsman flying out of the ground with the very first ball!

Wickets continued to fall at regular intervals. Some magnificant catching, notably by Big Red Dog strategically placed at square leg to protect the bad ball by Dan Fenwick , ripped the guts out of the Melville side who never got going eventually finishing on 95.

Tazman Kapadia true to reputation, got the chase off to a splendid start making 37 before falling to a plum LBW to Emma Watson the Melville teams premier woman bowler. Tazman was particulary dark with the decision (even darker than usual), giving the offending umpire a verbal as he trudged off.

This brought Gareth Cox with helmet, mouthguard, armguard, shoulder pads and any other protective armour he could fit into his suitcase - to the crease. Together with Bellis, these two guided the Gold team to the target inside 12 overs.

Craig Bulloch in his first game back from a lengthy break has, in tandom with Ross Laidlaw, left Hinuera in tatters.

Match Summary
Kaipaki have had a disjointed start to the Champions Trophy. Although this was the 4th round of the competition it was only Kaipaki’s 2nd game. Kaipaki were on tour last weekend in Queenstown meaning their match against Morrinsville has been deferred to a later date, and with St Paul’s not back at school yet their first game of the competition has been deferred to a later date also.

Craig Bulloch, who played for Kaipaki in is teenage years, had a magnificent return to the Baggy Green and Gold Cap. Opening the bowling with Ross Laidlaw he bowled a consistently good line and length to cripple the Hinuera batting line up. Bulloch has the advantage of being able to move the ball both ways and his experience will certainly add value to the Kaipaki XI.

Ross Laidlaw also bowled superbly. He has been working very hard in the nets with Brad Leonard and he has found his zip again. He also bowled a good line outside off stump which is a good sign for Kaipaki as they progress through this competition.

Hinuera could have been bowled out for 18 as a catch was dropped by the Kaipaki slips cordon when the score was 18 for 9.

Kaipaki now have another break as next week is a bye round for all teams due to the long weekend. They will now look forward to playing Cambridge and St Paul’s on the 14th and 15th of February.
