Champions Trophy Final ends in a no result due to bad weather.
Game: Kaipaki vs St Paul’s Collegiate(Two Day Final) Champions Trophy Final Venue: Cambridge Town Square (Grass) Date: Saturday 28 & 29 March 2015 Weather: Mostly Wet 22 degrees Toss: St Paul’s won the toss and decided to field first Team: Hugo Bothma, Corey Hyde, Thomas Benn, Adam Flegg, Brenden Flegg, Greg Patterson, Craig Bulloch, Carl Schwarz, Kieran Milburn, Brad Leonard, Ross Laidlaw, Ben Strang Result: No Result Match Statistics: Kaipaki 198 all out in 58 overs Kaipaki Batting: Hugo Bothma 73, Bradford Leonard 33 St Paul’s Batting: 20 for 1 in 10 overs Match Summary Kaipaki were sent in on a green seamer against a very good St Paul’s pace attack. After lots of rain in the lead up to the final the pitch had plenty of moisture and movement early on which troubled the Kaipaki top order. Number 3 batsman Hugo Bothma showed all his grit and determination again to hit a valuable 73 for Kaipaki. Bothma has proved to be a big match player this season and in the 3 big games Kaipaki have played – Mike Cotter Cup Final, National Club Qualifier and the Champions Trophy Final Bothma has got 3 decent scores over 50. Brad Leonard also batted well scoring a patient and mature 33 to support Bothma. Kaipaki were in a good position at 130 for 2 and looked to have the schoolboys under pressure. However the middle and lower order of Kaipaki could not capitalise on the impressive platform and Kaipaki were bundled out for 198. Kaipaki at the change of innings were confident that 198 was a good enough score to defend and get first innings points. Kaipaki were boasting a very good pace attack themselves. 198 looked a long way off for St Paul’s as the Kaipaki applied the pressure. The pitch still had plenty of movement and was very lively indeed. Unfortunately the rain set in around 3.30pm on Saturday and there was no further play in the final. Although there was a scheduled 2nd day the authorities called the game off as early as 11.25am the following day. Although Kaipaki won as many games as St Paul’s during the round robin stages they gained 2 more bonus points than Kaipaki which means they are crowned champions for the 2014/15 season. It is a deserving championship for St Paul’s who have added real quality to the WVCA club competition. Kaipaki are naturally disappointed to have the opportunity to win back to back championships taken away from them but they are immensely proud of what they have achieved this season. Out of 20 games they played this summer in one day and champions trophy cricket they had a record of played 20, won 17 lost 3. One of those games was against Greerton in the national Championship club qualifier. Kaipaki will celebrate another great season at their prizegiving on the 18th of April at Kaipaki Oval. Kind regards, Kent Currie Director Of Cricket 021 944 710 Brenden Flegg and Kieran Milburn also produce match winning performances
Game: Kaipaki vs Hinuera(106 Overs) Champions Trophy Venue: Kaipaki Oval (Artificial) Date: Saturday 21/03/15 Weather: Fine 27 degrees Toss: Hinuera won the toss and decided to bat first Team: Hugo Bothma, Corey Hyde, Thomas Benn, Kent Currie, Brenden Flegg, Chris Hurren, Greg Patterson, Craig Bulloch, Carl Schwarz, Kieran Milburn, Fraser Kilgour Result: Kaipaki won by 8 wickets Match Statistics: Hinuer 210 all out in 41 overs Kaipaki Bowling: Brenden Flegg 4 for 30 Kaipaki 212 for 2 in 38 overs Kaipaki Batting: Kieran Milburn 84no, Corey Hyde 111 Match Summary Kaipaki have finished the round robin stages of the Champions Trophy with a convincing win over 3rd placed Hinuera. Although the Kaipaki seam bowlers were probably not at their best with inconsistent line and lengths they still did enough to restrict Hinuera to 210 – Hinuera consistently lost wickets throughout their innings. Every time they threaten to produce a big partnership they lost a crucial wicket and could never gain any momentum. Opening bowler Brenden Flegg was Kaipaki’s best bowler. He knocked the top off the Hinuera’s order early in the game and he was rewarded for his hard work. 210 is a potentially tricky total to chase but opening batsman Corey Hyde who has been in vintage form this season dug in again and he was rewarded with his first century for Kaipaki. The nonchalant Hyde has been consistently patient at the top of the Kaipaki order. He has good defence against the quicks but also has the ability to capitalise on any loose bowling. He will be relieved to finally get his first century as he has had an uncanny knack of getting out in the 80’s on many previous occasions. Hyde is comfortably Kaipaki’s top runner scorer this season. Englishman Kieran Milburn also produced his best batting performance of the summer. Batting up the order he took his opportunity for some good batting time by compiling a mature 84no. Milburn is a compact player and he used his good technique to noodle the ball around for ones’s and two’s but also had the strength to hit bad balls to the boundary. It was a fine performance from Milburn and he complemented Hyde superbly. Kaipaki have been focusing on creating big partnership as that will ultimately win this championship so it is pleasing to see Kaipaki develop this part of their game. Kaipaki now look forward to the 20/20 Championship Finals today and then next week it’s their big game of the season – 2 day final v St Paul’s at Cambridge Town Square. Kind regards, Kent Currie Director Of Cricket 021 944 710 Greg Patterson stars with the ball and is well back up by opening batsmen, Kaipaki confirm place in Champions Trophy Final.
Game: Kaipaki vs Cambridge (106 Overs) Champions Trophy Venue: Kaipaki Oval (Artificial) Date: Saturday 14/03/15 Weather: Fine 27 degrees Toss: Cambridge won the toss and decided to bat first Team: Hugo Bothma, Corey Hyde, Thomas Benn, Brad Leonard, Adam Flegg, Brenden Flegg, Chris Hurren, Greg Patterson, Ross Laidlaw, Kieran Milburn, Ben Strang, Ross Laidlaw Result: Kaipaki won by 10 wickets Match Statistics: Cambridge 126 all out in 32 overs Kaipaki Bowling: Greg Patterson 6 for 39 off 11 overs Cambridge Batting: Keith Vincent 46 Kaipaki 127 for 0 in 23 overs Kaipaki Batting: Thomas Benn 53no, Corey Hyde 63no Match Summary Kaipaki have completely dismantled neighbouring club Cambridge, beating them by an emphatic 10 wickets. Cambridge decided to bat first and were in immediate trouble losing both openers cheaply. There was a little resistance from Keith Vincent and Vern Woodhams but after they were dismissed Cambridge capitulated to be all out for 126. Kaipaki bowled well and it was Greg Patterson that was the chief destroyer, picking up 6 for 39 in his 11 overs. He was well supported in the field by his team mates. Kaipaki made easy work of the 126 required and openers Corey Hyde and Thomas Benn making sure that Kaipaki were not to lose a wicket in their chase. Kaipaki were never challenged by the Cambridge attack and they cruised to victory with 51 overs still remaining in the game. Kind regards, Kent Currie Director Of Cricket 021 944 710 Kaipaki breeze past an under strength Morrinsville XI
Game: Kaipaki vs Morrinsville (106 Overs) Champions Trophy Venue: Te Awamutu Collegel (Artificial) Date: Saturday 07/03/15 Weather: Fine 23 degrees Toss: Morrinsville won the toss and decided to bat first Team: Hugo Bothma, Corey Hyde, Thomas Benn, Brad Leonard, Michael Clayton, Craig Bulloch, Brenden Flegg, Chris Hurren, Greg Patterson, Ross Laidlaw, Kieran Milburn Result: Kaipaki won by 8 wickets Match Statistics: Morrinsville 109 all out in 42 overs Kaipaki Bowling: Brenden Flegg 2 for 12 off 10 overs, Greg Patterson 2 for 18 off 12 overs Batting: Brenden Revell 37 Kaipaki 110 for 2 in 15 overs Kaipaki Batting: Hugo Bothma 32, Corey Hyde 37no Match Summary Kaipaki have breezed past a beleaguered Morrinsville at Te Awamutu College on Saturday. With Waikato Valley playing Hamilton in a Fergus Hickey fixture also over the weekend Morrinsville were without their 2 key players which unfortunately left them depleted. The Kaipaki seam attack ripped through Morrinsville to have them all out for a paltry 109. Wickets were evenly shared with Brenden Flegg and Greg Patterson the returning the best figures. In reply the inform Cory Hyde and Hugo Bothma made sure that Kaipaki chased the necessary runs down by the 15th over. Kaipaki are now 3 competition points from confirming a place in the Champions Trophy Final with St Paul’s that will be played in late March. Kind regards, Kent Currie Director Of Cricket 021 944 710 After putting in one of their best fielding performances of the season Kaipaki then put in their worst batting performance of the season.
Game: Kaipaki vs St Paul’s (106 Overs) Champions Trophy Venue: Kaipaki Oval (Artificial) Date: Saturday 01/03/15 Weather: Hot and sunny 28 degrees Toss: Kaipaki won the toss and decided to Bowl first Team: Hugo Bothma, Corey Hyde, Thomas Benn, Brad Leonard, Kent Currie, Fraser Kilgour, Brenden Flegg, Adam Flegg, Ben Strang, Dean Busch, David Morris, Jerem Wylie Result: Kaipaki lost by 70 runs Match Statistics: St Paul’s 196 all out in 43 overs Kaipaki Bowling: Adam Flegg 3 for 66 off 12 overs, Brenden Flegg 3 for 51 off 10 overs St Paul’s Batting: B Higgins 76 Kaipaki 126 all out in 34 overs Kaipaki Batting: Hugo Bothma 51, Kent Currie 27 Match Summary Kaipaki’s batting capitulated against top placed St Paul’s in a catch up game on Sunday. After knocking St Paul’s over for 196 Kaipaki has put in one of their most complacent and reckless batting performances since the club was established 4 years ago. The problem with Brenden McCullum scoring plenty of runs in quick time against quality bowling is that every club cricketer thinks he can do the same thing… but they only end up licking their wounds in the pavilion moments later. This summed up the Kaipaki batting performance. With a lightning fast outfield and short boundaries, 196 should never be enough at this time of year but as it turned out it was 70 runs too many. Kaipaki missing 6 of their regular starters decided to bowl first and they restricted St Paul’s to a meagre run rate early on. Former New Zealand and ND batsman Mark Bailey opened the innings and got a brisk 21 but apart from that the St Paul’s batters found it difficult to penetrate the Kaipaki fielders. Stand in Captain Brad Leonard showed all his experience by setting well placed fields to assist his hard working bowlers. Kaipaki only used 4 bowlers but it was again the Flegg brothers who returned the best figures. They are very good additions to the Kaipaki Squad and will certainly put plenty of pressure on regular players to keep their spots as Kaipaki chase a place in the Champions Trophy Final. St Paul’s seam attack of Simon Morby and T Yarrall did the job for St Paul’s. Simon Morby returning figures of 6 for 47 off 15 overs. It was a very good display by the tall right arm seamer. He bowled with reasonable pace and got good bounce. He was supported in the field by his agile team mates who continually kept the pressure on the Kaipaki batsman. Hugo Bothma was the shining light in the Kaipaki innings. After his 41no on Saturday he again put in another good performance to compile 56 runs. He unfortunately didn’t find any support from his teammates. The loss is a good wake up call for Kaipaki who will be disappointed in this outcome. But it has a very strong positive as the weekends double header had given some more players valuable playing time and with a jam packed March schedule (have another catch up game v Morrinsville on the 15th plus 20/20 finals) they will be calling on their depth to get them through a tricky period. If they are good enough to get into the Champions Trophy Final there will be a good fight for positions. Kind regards, Kent Currie Director Of Cricket 021 944 710 Kaipaki rolled Otorohanga for 113 and won the game within 3 hours.
Game: Kaipaki vs Otorohanga (106 Overs) Champions Trophy Venue: Kaipaki Oval (Artificial) Date: Saturday 28/02/15 Weather: Hot and sunny 28 degrees Toss: Otorohanga won the toss and decided to bat first Team: Hugo Bothma, Corey Hyde, Chris Hurren, Thomas Benn, Carl Schwarz ©, Brad Leonard, Kent Currie, Kieran Milburn, Brenden Flegg, Adam Flegg, Ben Strang, Michael Clayton Result: Kaipaki won by 9 wickets Match Statistics: Otorohanga 113 all out in 14 overs Kaipaki Bowling: Adam Flegg 3 for 26 off 7 overs, Kent Currie 3 for 21 off 4 overs St Paul’s Batting: F Hamilton 41 Kaipaki 118 for 1 in 15 overs Kaipaki Batting: Kieran Milburn 51no, Hugo Bothma 41no Match Summary Kaipaki continued their unbeaten run by dismantling Otorohanga by 9 wickets in their first home game for quite some time. In great batting conditions Otorohanga elected to bat but struggled from the outset as brothers Brenden and Adam Flegg knocked over the top order. Otorohanga’s English import F Hamilton provided the only resistance hitting a well measured 41. The Flegg brothers who have been out of cricket for a couple of years both returned very good figures in their comeback game. They both bowled a good line and length at a reasonable pace to suffocate the Otorohanga batting line up. Kaipaki’s batting were never challenged and they got the runs within 15 overs. Kieran Milburn got a much needed score under his belt by hitting 54 and Hugo Bothma who is becoming an unsung hero in this Kaipaki team again produced a well balanced 41 to make sure Kaipaki secured maximum points from this game. Kind regards, Kent Currie Director Of Cricket 021 944 710 Jerem Wylie hits a boundary off the last ball of the game to secure maximum competition points for Kaipaki.
Game: Kaipaki vs St Paul’s Collegiate (106 Overs) Champions Trophy Venue: St Paul’s Collegiate (Grass) Date: Saturday 21/02/15 Weather: Overcast with sunny spells Toss: St Paul’s won the toss and decided to bat first Team: Jerem Wylie, Craig Bulloch, Hugo Bothma, Corey Hyde, Chris Hurren, Greg Patterson, Thomas Benn, Carl Schwarz ©, Brad Leonard, Ross Laidlaw, Kieran Milburn Result: Kaipaki won by 2 wickets Match Statistics: St Paul’s 238 all out in 54 overs Kaipaki Bowling: Craig Bulloch 3 for 36 off 9 overs St Paul’s Batting: A Blackett 63 Kaipaki 241 for 8 in 52 overs Kaipaki Batting: Corey Hyde 84, Jerem Wylie 60no, Brad Leonard 31 Match Summary Kaipaki have fought hard to beat previously unbeaten St Paul’s in a very even encounter at St Paul’s. In a game that could of gone either way Kaipaki’s experienced players in Corey Hyde, Brad Leonard, Jerem Wylie and Craig Bulloch have led Kaipaki to victory. After winning the toss and electing to bat on a pitch that had good pace and bounce St Paul’s batted patiently to set Kaipaki 238. At One stage it looked like St Paul’s would get close to 300 after being 160 for 3 at 36 overs. The teams took lunch at this score and it was exactly the regroup Kaipaki needed as they came out after lunch and took 7 wickets for 60 runs to bowl St Paul’s out in the 54th over. Kaipaki bowled reasonably well throughout the innings but they did have to fight hard to get wickets. Bulloch returning the best figures with 3 for 36 but Wylie and Patterson also bowled a consistent line and length. Kaipaki lost wickets regularly throughout their innings but the mainstays of Hyde (84), Leonard (31) and Wylie (60no) made sure that Kaipaki kept ahead in their run chase. Kaipaki probably should have won the game a lot earlier than they did but St Paul’s fought hard right to the end and Kaipaki eventually needed 2 runs off the last ball of the game to win. Wylie who seems to play his best when the backs are against the wall made sure of the victory by hitting the last ball for four over square leg. Kaipaki remain unbeaten in their Champions trophy defence. However they have a double header this weekend playing Otorohanga on Saturday and a catch up match vs St Paul’s on Sunday – both at Kaipaki Oval. With a depleted playing squad this weekend Kaipaki will have to call on their club depth to keep their unbeaten record intact. DATE- Valentine’s Day WEATHER- Sunny With Shades Of Grey !! TEAM LIST- D. Armstrong, D Bellis, D. Faville, D. Fenwick and some more players whose name did not start with a ‘D’ The Seddon Cup was on the line again. Defending champions West Ham facing Kaipaki at home. Surprisingly, we managed to find 11 players with ease this weekend, considering it was Valentine’s Day. Let’s be honest, we all know who our first love is…BEER….the biggest motivation to turn up for cricket. A big day for Kaipaki Gold. A “Must Win” match in order to make it to the semis plus the added pressure of trying to win back the Seddon Cup on home soil. The last time we faced West Ham, things didn’t go in our favour. After winning the toss, Michael Clayton took the cricketing world by surprise, when he told the opposition Captain that we would bowl first. The first Captain to ever make this decision in 125 years at Kaipaki Oval. Opening the bowling attack were Howard Baker and Nick Binnie - which confused the batsmen with their spin and pace combination. Both bowlers bowled a continuous spell of 7 overs on the trot, giving a great start to the innings. Howie picked up 4 wickets in his spell and Nick got 1 – with the visitors going to drinks in a bit of trouble at 100/5. After drinks - good contributions from our part time bowlers Taz Kapadia and Darin Armstrong, picking up 2 wickets each. I guess Mr Clayton spotted their hidden talents during the Waitangi Day 6 a side tournament. Kaipaki rolled West Ham for 148 in 29 overs. LUNCH – a great effort from the lads with their Plates this week – there was enough food to feed both Teams plus the Kaipaki Green Team who came to support after cleaning up in their match earlier – and then still enough food left over to feed everyone after the match had finished ! Kaipaki chasing 149 at home seemed fairly achievable, however going by our past record we didn’t want to take this too lightly. Opening the batting were M Kapadia and D Faville, giving a slow – but steady - start to the innings. First to go was D Faville. In came D Fenwick, who took control of the innings and put the run chase within reach before the drinks break. Unfortunately, he lost his wicket just before the break. West Ham saw a small glimmer of hope after the drinks break as Kaipaki lost 2 more wickets in quick succession. The game was eventually won in the 25th over. D Armstrong doing the final honours having to go out to the middle with 1 run required to win – hit the first ball to the boundary. Key highlights: H. Baker picking up 4 wickets in his spell and a good day at the field too. Was awarded the best bowler for the day. D. Fenwick scored a quick 67 and Musti Kapadia anchored the innings with 44 not out. Big thanks to the Clayton kids – Taya and Billy for helping us dish out the food at halftime. The Senior C tournament is now reaching its final stages, with 2 more “Must Win” games coming up – if we are to make the Semis. We are playing Good Guys this coming weekend at Raymond Park. With the ICC World Cup fever in the air the motivation will be high among the boys to win the upcoming games. Well done Gold Team for making it this far. Musti…. Patterson and Kilgour star in one sided game.
Game: Kaipaki vs Cambridge (106 Overs) Champions Trophy Venue: Cambridge Town Square, Cambridge (Grass) Date: Saturday 14/02/15 Weather: Hot and Sunny Toss: Kaipaki won the toss and decided to bowl first Team: Jerem Wylie, Craig Bulloch, Hugo Bothma, Corey Hyde, Wayne Clifford, Greg Patterson, Thomas Benn, Fraser Kilgour, Carl Schwarz, Brad Leonard, Ross Laidlaw, Dean Busch Result: Kaipaki won by 7 wickets Match Statistics: Cambridge 148 all out in 35 overs Kaipaki Bowling: Greg Patterson 4 for 26 off 7 overs, Dean Busch 3 for 32 off 10 overs Kaipaki 149 for 3 in 19 overs Kaipaki Batting: Fraser Kilgour 65no, Brad Leonard 44 Match Summary Kaipaki have put in a very good performance to beat neighbouring club Cambridge. Kaipaki were able to bowl a consistently good line and length on a pitch that rewarded accurate bowling. After Ross Laidlaw and Craig Bulloch knocked over Cambridge’s opening batsmen it paved way for the ever improving seam bowler Greg Patterson and the evergreen Dean Busch to finish Cambridge off. Patterson came to NZ as a batsman but due to Kaipaki’s batting depth and limited bowling stocks Patterson has found himself as Kaipaki’s leading wicket taker this season. Dean Busch also in the team as a batsman has been in fine form with the ball and has again returned good figures – the wily Busch still has the ability to move the ball both ways and has good variation that keeps the batsmen guessing. Kaipaki will be happy that they put in another good fielding display as it has been a continual work on this season. Bowling Cambridge out for 148 is an impressive display as Cambridge are always tough on their home turf. Kaipaki in return made little work of the 148 required. Fraser Kilgour and Brad Leonard guiding them to victory in 19 overs. Leonard will be particularly happy with his performance as he has been frustrated with a lack of batting time this season and he will be happy with his contribution. Kilgour struggling with tendonitis in his feet batted well. His 6 that finished the game cleared the main pavilion, which is a massive hit in any game of cricket. Kaipaki now look forward to playing the other unbeaten side St Paul’s next Saturday. Regards, Kent Currie Kaipaki Cricket Enthusiast |
