Match Summary
Kaipaki have finished the round robin stages of the Champions Trophy with a convincing win over 3rd placed Hinuera. Although the Kaipaki seam bowlers were probably not at their best with inconsistent line and lengths they still did enough to restrict Hinuera to 210 – Hinuera consistently lost wickets throughout their innings. Every time they threaten to produce a big partnership they lost a crucial wicket and could never gain any momentum.
Opening bowler Brenden Flegg was Kaipaki’s best bowler. He knocked the top off the Hinuera’s order early in the game and he was rewarded for his hard work.
210 is a potentially tricky total to chase but opening batsman Corey Hyde who has been in vintage form this season dug in again and he was rewarded with his first century for Kaipaki. The nonchalant Hyde has been consistently patient at the top of the Kaipaki order. He has good defence against the quicks but also has the ability to capitalise on any loose bowling. He will be relieved to finally get his first century as he has had an uncanny knack of getting out in the 80’s on many previous occasions. Hyde is comfortably Kaipaki’s top runner scorer this season.
Englishman Kieran Milburn also produced his best batting performance of the summer. Batting up the order he took his opportunity for some good batting time by compiling a mature 84no. Milburn is a compact player and he used his good technique to noodle the ball around for ones’s and two’s but also had the strength to hit bad balls to the boundary. It was a fine performance from Milburn and he complemented Hyde superbly. Kaipaki have been focusing on creating big partnership as that will ultimately win this championship so it is pleasing to see Kaipaki develop this part of their game.
Kaipaki now look forward to the 20/20 Championship Finals today and then next week it’s their big game of the season – 2 day final v St Paul’s at Cambridge Town Square.
