I am not sure that people understand how incredible the feat is of the Chiefs winning the Super Rugby Championship twice in a row. Winning twice in a row in itself is not so incredible but how the Chiefs achieved that feat is in my opinion, truly incredible.
When you look at each player individually you start to understand what a feat it is.
Robinson/Auckland guy at fullback (can’t even remember his name) were not household names or in high demand, the wingers were at best liabilities, the centre no one had heard of, the second five eight has gone back to obscurity in Counties, first five very good but developing, the half back talented but ‘loose’ at best.
The number 8 was a club player, open side flankers young and talented, one lock was young and talented the other a good journeyman, the blindside is our only regular All Black but struggling to be a frontline player. The front row are all second tier fill in All Blacks at best.
Add to that they lost Kahui through injury and SBW to league from the year before.
Now if you wrote the above and didn’t know the result you wouldn’t believe that ‘mob’ could achieve anything much less win a championship involving players from the best three international rugby nations not once but twice.
What the coaches achieved at the Chiefs over the last two years has been nothing short of incredible/extraordinary.
What they appear to value is attitude, discipline, quality people and the development of skills so they can coach the ‘how to do’ not endlessly talk about the more obvious and known to everyone ‘what to do’.
They selected players who fitted these requirements. They talk little to the media and just got on with
things.
Now if you had listened to your grandparents you all would have heard
similar stories before!
